Cool Tools: Pocket Weather Meter. "The Kestrel 4500 Pocket Weather Meter is a really cool tool for outdoors sports enthusiasts. You'll never be left in the dark wondering what the weather is or is going to be. Its easy to use functionality and interface allows you to scan more than 17 data types and lets you store up to 2000 data points manually or automatically for long term trend analysis. A slick preferences menu allows for customization of readout and data type, so you can minimize scrolling through information that you don't really want to see. A built in compass keeps you on track and the wind gauge measures wind speed from four cardinal directions. The whole point is that with a tool like the Kestrel 4500, you can monitor wind speed to calculate sail trim for a regatta or track altitude, temperature, wind chill as well as barometric pressure for a high altitude climb. Because it's waterproof and floats, water sports enthusiasts can use it to monitor water temperature. Other features include: Data upload to PC via optional accessory interface (Windows only) / minimum, maximum and average values / Backlighting for nocturnal viewing / Data charting / Five language options / User replaceable impeller. It runs off of 2 AAA batteries and comes complete with a soft pouch and neck lanyard. Extend the capability of the Kestrel 4500 by adding optional accessories that turn in into an automated weather station. Instructions are so easy to use, we were up and running in minutes."

Boothwyn, Pennsylvania-based Nielsen-Kellerman offers its Kestrel 4000 Pocket Weather Meter, which is a handheld weather meter that measures a variety of environmental conditions such as wind speed, temperature, barometric pressure, relative humidity, and density altitude that affect racing performance. “The most important measurement to drag racers is density altitude as they are able to dial their car off this number alone,” said Christine Munding. “The Kestrel 4000 is used by all types and levels of drag racers, from the grassroots racer to crew chiefs on the NHRA circuit.” According to Munding, the Kestrel 4000 is an affordable, “highly accurate” portable weather station, and because of its size, racers may take readings quickly and easily right at the track rather than back at the trailer. The unit also comes with 480 data point storage, which allows racers to store weather information about a specific performance. “The Indy Racing League uses these units, and although they have highly advanced weather equipment right there in the pits, they often use the Kestrel 4000 to cross check and consider it a valuable tool,” said Munding. “Formula 1 racing is also using these units as they use density altitude when setting up engines, as well as need the wind and temperature conditions on the track.”
